Job Description

What We are Looking For

The timing could not be better! Join HNTB as a Highway Project Manager at our Massachusetts branch. We are searching for an experienced and skilled highway design engineer to coordinate and deliver transportation engineering projects on time and under budget, from initial start-up to project closeout. These projects can vary in size from local intersection and multimodal corridor improvements to huge interchanges, multimodal improvements, and bridge reconstructions. Projects might be delivered traditionally or through Design-Build.

The ideal applicant will be in charge of supervising HNTB’s delivery of the largest and most complicated transport projects in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. You will be a technical expert and leader capable of winning and completing highway and other transportation projects for our public transportation agency clients. Candidates should be able to share their experience with others in a way that encourages the development of less experienced employees while also improving the overall team performance.

At HNTB, you can develop a career that is significant to you while establishing communities that matter to all of us. For over a century, we have provided solutions for some of the largest and most complicated infrastructure projects in the country. With our unprecedented expansion, now is an exciting time to join our team of employee-owners. We provide a flexible work schedule, and the position may be based mostly in Boston or Chelmsford, MA.

What You Will Do:

  • Responsible for developing project scope and fee quotations, as well as assisting with technical proposal and contract preparation in accordance with HNTB’s Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).
  • Serves as the key client interface, managing the project team to ensure that the scope, timeline, and budgets are completed and the client is satisfied. Assists in client project scoping and contract negotiation.
  • Performs technical discipline responsibilities such as analysis, reporting, design, specification, and production for given projects.
  • On each project, the firm’s project delivery plan is put into action using HNTB’s Sophisticated Delivery Approach. Oversees the formulation and implementation of the project management plan. Supervises and mentors the team to achieve the project’s overall objectives.
  • Coordination with managers on project staffing, including but not limited to recruiting, development, retention, and succession of project personnel; formulation of a plan for project staff reporting; and assistance with performance and compensation reviews.
  • Collaborates with Client Service Leaders and Pursuit Champions to support business development, client relationship building, and pursuit activities for strategic and mini-mega projects in accordance with HNTB’s Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Collaborates with the project team and marketing resources to develop effective proposal and presentation materials. Leads proposal creation and interview presentations for strategic and mini-mega projects for clients, as well as general presentations in the industry and community.
  • May be in charge of staff recruiting, hiring, development, and retention, as well as the creation of a staff reporting strategy, performance and compensation reviews, and succession planning.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

What You Will Need:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering and eight years of relevant experience.
  • 2 years of task management or Deputy Project Manager experience.

The right candidate:

  • Provides technical guidance, mentorship, and support to HNTB management and employees.
  • Interacts with clients about project details, technical issues, and industry trends.
  • Can address problems with complex transportation assignments.
  • Manages projects and/or serves as engineering lead for them.
  • Has extensive technical experience in transportation engineering.
  • Creates concept-level design solutions for roadways, intersections, and interchanges.
  • Has experience delivering projects for MassDOT.
  • Enjoys opportunities to advise and guide personnel throughout the design process, including time spent mentoring and developing the skills of less experienced colleagues.
  • Provides technical assistance as needed on complex or atypical engineering projects.
  • Assesses designs and analyses for completeness and fit.

What We Prefer:

  • Ten years of related experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D
