Environmental Health and Safety Programme Manager


Highlights of the Position:


  • Programme Manager, Environmental Health and Safety
  • Location: Skokie, Illinois.
  • Full-time vs. part-time: Full-time
  • Monday-Friday, during regular business hours



What you will do is as follows:


Management of Health and Safety


  • As part of the EH&S team, oversee the assessment of environmental, health, and safety risks throughout the System, and implement best practices and process improvement to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Local requirements and accreditation standards.


  • Monitor employee injury data for the selected region on a regular basis. Recognise and anticipate potentially dangerous or harmful practices. Meet with leadership on a regular basis to recommend and develop steps to ensure a safe working environment. (Responsibility at the regional level).


  • Professional and consultative support is provided to ensure that safety policies and work practices are implemented and maintained. Drive continuous EH&S improvement throughout the organisation by developing and improving programmes and standards, training, and best practices. Create and manage systems and processes that promote continuous improvement. (Responsibility at the regional level)


  • Conduct risk assessments to identify high-risk operations and develop alternate courses of action, mitigation methods, and safe suggestions.


  • Collaborates with others to effectively identify and resolve safety issues, including but not limited to Infection Control, Facilities, Housekeeping, Construction, Occupational Health, Public Safety, and Risk Management professionals.Participate in related Councils/committees as allocated by System level duties.



Compliance with Regulations


  • Examines and implements programmes to ensure compliance with appropriate agency occupational safety and health standards. The obligations of agencies include, but are not limited to, OSHA, TJC, and IDPH – Life Safety, as applicable.


  • Interprets, assesses, and monitors organisational compliance with occupational and life safety codes.


  • Creates, recommends, and implements environmental health and safety policy; creates accident prevention and loss control systems and programmes.


  • Collects and analyses data from environmental tours in order to discover patterns and potential safety threats, and then discusses the findings with system leaders and committees to ensure perpetual preparation for and compliance with regulatory bodies.


  • Serve as a liaison and lead regulatory compliance inspections with a variety of regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Department of Transportation, the Joint Commission, and the State and Federal Environmental Protection Agency, IDPH, IEMA, as well as leading regulatory compliance inspections and communication. To ensure closure, monitor the status of completed areas designated for improvement.




System Programme Management


  • Assume the role of System lead and subject matter expert for specific elements of the overarching Environmental Health & Safety/EOC programme. These topics could include industrial hygiene, environmental compliance, waste management/sustainability, injury prevention (blood bodily fluid, workplace violence, slip falls), safety training and promotion, human factors/safe patient handling/ergonomics, and so on.


  • Lead complicated improvement projects involving internal departments and external partners by engaging stakeholders, managing workplans in accordance with the established continuous improvement approach, and delivering measurable outcomes.


  • As appropriate, participates in System Safety Council to represent designated System elements of the overarching Environmental Health & Safety/EOC programme.


  • Responsible for System level contracts (and contractors as needed) based on assigned System programme duties (e.g. integrated waste management, chemical management/safety data sheet, patient handling and office furniture, online/in person training vendors). Responsible for managing and monitoring performance and generating efficiencies, as well as addressing issues and seeking ongoing continuous improvement.




You will require the following items:

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, environmental, public health, or a related discipline is required.




  • Understand OSHA, EPA, Joint Commission, IDPH, local, state, and other federal environmental health and safety regulations and policies.


  • Capability to establish and document incident and process investigations, as well as write safety and health policies.


  • MS Office suite knowledge, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.


  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication abilities are required.





  • 5+ years of experience working in environmental health, safety, human factors/ergonomics, or a public health function.


  • 3+ years of developing leadership experience in Environmental Health and Safety; and knowledge of Joint Commission (or regulatory equivalent) Environment of Care and Life Safety criteria for a hospital or clinical setting.


  • Experience and success in planning, coordinating, and delivering effective adult education and training.



Certification: System-related certifications are recommended. These are some examples:


  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional)


  • CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist)


  • CHSP (Certified Hospital Safety Professional)


  • CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager)


  • Safe Patient Handling (CSPHP) or another credential linked to environmental health and safety.
